Car crash caused by Laura Collins
|We have 2 images of Dark Shadows Peter Guthrie|
Dr. Guthrie was first mentioned by Frank Garner as being a professor of parapsychology at Dartmouth who investigates reports of the supernatural (159). After examining Elizabeth, he concludes that she is in a trance and convinces Carolyn Stoddard that Elizabeth should be moved to a hospital. He arranges to stay at Collinwood so that he can conduct an investigation as to the cause of the illness (160). Dr. Guthrie tells Victoria and Carolyn that something at Collinwood wants to harm Elizabeth. He learns of the conflict between Elizabeth and Laura Collins. Victoria tells him about David Collins and her own encounter with the ghost of Josette Collins (161). Dr. Guthrie advises Victoria to keep David away from Laura. Victoria tells him about her being compelled by Josette Collins to go to the crypt at Eagle Hill Cemetery. When he meets David, they visit the Old House together. While there, David sees the portrait of Josette transform into the completed painting of Laura that Sam Evans made (162). The same day, Dr. Guthrie visits with Laura (163). Following up on David's encounter, Dr. Guthrie decides to visit Sam Evans to learn more about what made him create the paintings of Laura Collins. Dr. Guthrie and Victoria gain permission for him to visit from Sam's daughter Maggie at the Collinsport Inn. While there, Dr. Guthrie meets Burke Devlin. While Victoria stays to talk with Burke, Dr. Guthrie goes to the Evans Cottage alone. When Sam tells him that he painted them against his will, Dr. Guthrie tells him that he believes him. Dr. Guthrie learns from Victoria, who learned from Burke, that Elizabeth was alone with Laura right before she became ill (164). When Carolyn learns of this, she plans to confront Laura. However, Dr. Guthrie believes that it would be wise that Laura not know that they suspect her. He then brings up the idea of having a séance to find out more about Elizabeth's sickness. He is convinced that David is safe while he is with his mother (165). Dr. Guthrie goes to the Blue Whale for a meeting with Burke and has a drink with Sam. Sam tells him that Laura was responsible for his hands being burnt. He relates to Guthrie about his terrible dreams about Laura the night the fire burnt his hands. Sam is relieved to hear that Guthrie believes him. Burke shows up and the two sit down alone. Burke wants to know more about Guthrie and his intentions. Guthrie asks him about Elizabeth and Laura's last meeting but gets no answers. Later, he goes to the Cottage to question Laura about the night Elizabeth collapsed. He invites her to the séance he's planning but she declines (168). Guthrie organized the first séance at Collinwood in order to contact the spirit of Josette Collins (170). He brought a tape recorder to the séance, which he demonstrated to Laura the next day. After Laura left, the tape had mysteriously been recorded over with the sound of fire.
He was murdered by Laura when she caused his car to burst into flames and crash, burning him to death (186).
