The Hammond Foundling Home was located in New York, operating under the direction of Mrs. Hopewell. It was the home of Victoria Winters from the time she was born until she was requested to come to Collinsport by Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (1).

The infant Victoria was dropped off on the doorstep in the winter of 1947 in a cardboard box with a note stating, "Her name is Victoria. I cannot take care of her." The home took her in and gave her the last name "Winters" after the season. From the time she was two until she turned sixteen, the home received $50 in cash addressed to Victoria every month. The letters were never signed, but they were postmarked Bangor, Maine (4).

Victoria lived a somewhat unhappy life at the home, constantly wondering who her family was. When she became an adult, she began working at the home as an employee (1, 8).

One girl at the home, who was nine or ten years old at the time, used to chase people away because she didn't like herself and figured no one else would either. A man eventually came and talked with her over and over again until the girl realized her problem (15).

Victoria told this story to David Collins, but she may have been making it up to help him deal with his problem.

The only beds at the foundling home were iron cots (2). However, during one of Vicky's flashback sequences (1), where she is in her room at the foundling home packing for her journey to Collinsport, this appears not to be the case, as a standard bed with box spring, mattress, and bed posts is shown.

One of the nurses at the Foundling Home was Miss Norris. Victoria said she was very kind to her and used to let her wear her necklace. Miss Norris later sent the necklace to Victoria as a wedding present (624).

The name of the foundling home was not given until 6.
