Elizabeth unwittingly discovers the resting place of Tom, and Barnabas heads there with a stake.

Synopsis[]

There is a full moon over Collinwood, and the lives of those who live here seem to be going in directions they have never gone. A woman who has held the family together finds herself a kind of outcast, while another feels the need of a forbidden secret which can only destroy her.

Tom bites Julia; Barnabas and Willie wonder where he could be hiding. Elizabeth shows up, but Barnabas is worried for her; he offers to go back to the Windcliff Sanitarium with her. Elizabeth says she begged for Julia's help, but she’s involved because she followed her to a coffin in the Collins Family Cemetery.

Barnabas is intrigued. He goes to the crypt, where he finds Julia, unconscious and nearly drained and carries her back to the Old House. Willie and Barnabas go to Tom’s coffin to destroy him; Tom sees Barnabas holding a stake. They struggle, and Tom goes in for the kill.

Memorable quotes[]

Barnabas (to Willie): Are you being profound?

Barnabas: What do you want me to admit, Willie? That I care for Julia more than I appear to? All right, I will admit it. She's been a part of my life for so long, a very important part, and I must find her. But where could they be? (Referring to Julia and Tom) Where could he be?

Dramatis personae[]

Background information and notes[]

Production[]

  • There is a tape edit in the teaser after Julia Hoffman starts to descend the stairs.
  • A dark vertical band can be seen on left of the screen affecting one camera.
  • There is a tape edit as Barnabas and Willie return to the Old House.
  • The two-color afghan in Josette's room is a different one from the one usually at Maggie's cottage. [Addendum: This green and brown afghan has been seen in Josette's room (and elsewhere) before.]

Story[]

  • Barnabas finally admits that he cares for Julia.
  • Elizabeth says that she saw Julia and the coffin in an empty crypt at the edge of the "Collins cemetery." It is unclear if this is a cemetery on the estate separate from Eagle Hill Cemetery. In the pre-Barnabas episodes, it was established that Eagle Hill was some distance from Collinwood and that very few Collins family members were buried there. Over time, however, Eagle Hill has moved closer to Collinwood in the narrative, sometimes even seeming to be on the Collinwood grounds, and many Collins family members have been buried there.
  • TIMELINE: 3:05am: Barnabas and Willie return to the Old House. 4:30am: Barnabas brings Julia to the Old House.

Bloopers and continuity errors[]

  • John Karlen flubs a line: "You're acting like some man whose secretary is missing. And I know that's how...you don't feel."
  • Jonathan Frid has difficulty with his lines throughout the episode. "Adam may come here tonight. He may demand to find out what... how far we’ve gone with the experiment. What can I say?" "Obviously. I can’t put together the parts of a body into a human, with life or breath." "Well, we can’t stop at anything... with...with nothing done."
  • When Barnabas and Willie are talking about what to do with Julia after Willie has taken Elizabeth to Josette's room, there is a boom mic shadow on the Old House parlor wall and secretary.
  • In the last act, as Barnabas is preparing to leave the Old House to destroy Tom Jennings, he somehow misses getting his left arm into the sleeve of his coat. [Barnabas wears an Inverness coat which has no sleeves. The arm of his suit jacket is visible before being covered by the cape.]
  • There is considerable studio noise towards the end of the episode as Elizabeth talks to Julia. Also, Joan Bennett looks at the teleprompter often as she speaks to Julia.
  • As seen previously, Tom's coffin opened from the top, but now it opens sideways.
