Burke discovers that Bill is dead.

Synopsis[]

My name is Victoria Winters. The musty corridors of Collinwood are behind me at the moment. Ahead of me are the streets of Collinsport itself and a journey that might take me into the dead world of the past. A journey I hope will start at a small restaurant on the main street of this very small town.

Burke still doesn't know that Bill Malloy, who gave him his start as a kid, has been found dead (55). Maggie drops the news and Burke regrets Malloy's quest for truth. Maggie says Bill drowned, he wasn't murdered. He asks if Sam knows about Malloy's death. Victoria shows up for lunch. She and Burke exchange ideas heatedly on how upset Roger is about Malloy's death. The autopsy report arrives. The Sheriff and Burke talk about George's job. Victoria tells Maggie about her sad past and receives a dinner invitation. Burke wants to know what the sheriff knows and wants to kill the killer. Malloy had a blow on the head, but that doesn't mean much. Victoria refuses an invitation from Burke in favor of keeping her dinner date with Sam and Maggie.

Memorable quotes[]

Burke: (about Victoria) Nice girl.
Maggie: Very.
Burke: It's too bad she's always walking into the lion's den.

Maggie (to Vicki): It doesn't make sense for a nice gal like you to bury yourself in that spooky joint.

Victoria: That was a wonderful lunch, Maggie. How much do I owe you?
Maggie: It's on the house.
Victoria: Uh-uh!
Maggie: Oh, don't worry about it. The clam chowder was two weeks old and the lobster roll's from last year. Just don't send me your doctor bills.

Dramatis personae[]

Background information and notes[]

Production[]

Story[]

  • Bill Malloy gave Burke his start, working for him on the boats.
  • The price chart is partially visible when Maggie talks with Burke and Victoria at the coffee shop counter. Roast pork is 1.05, a hamburger cost 55 cents, a cheeseburger 65 cents, roast beef is 1.25, and a coke is 15 cents. Most of the sandwiches are 50 - 60 cents while a lettuce & tomato sandwich is only 40 cents and the western omelette is 1.25.
  • The Collinsport Inn and coffee shop are on the main street of Collinsport.
  • Bangor is about 50 miles from Collinsport.
  • TIMELINE: Roger closed down the cannery for the day to honor Bill's death. Burke last saw Bill the day before yesterday, somewhere between 8pm and 9pm at the Blue Whale tavern. Maggie invites Victoria to dinner later in the evening (she will attend as planned in episode 60). Burke left the Blue Whale at 10:45pm to go to Bill's meeting. Bill's body was in the sea for nearly two days; he 'fell' in at 10:45pm. Victoria plans to return to the Collinsport Inn at 6:30pm to pick up Maggie to go to the Evans home.

Bloopers and continuity errors[]

  • When Maggie and Burke are talking at the diner, for a moment the frame is overexposed before the lighting fades to normal.
  • A boom microphone shadow moves to the left of Maggie as she gets off the coffee shop phone with Sheriff Patterson.
  • Actor Dana Elcar refers to Burke as "Malloy" but then corrects himself just before he asks when the last time Burke saw Malloy.
  • When Maggie and Vicki are talking about Sam at the diner, there is a lot of shuffling and whispering off-stage.
  • We hear Maggie and Vicki starting their scene at the diner while the camera is still showing Burke leaving the sheriff's office.
  • Mitchell Ryan took too long getting from the sheriff's office set to the diner set (likely because Kathryn Leigh Scott and Alexandra Moltke started the diner scene too early), and Alexandra Moltke had to stand and do nothing for a few seconds. Then, even though Burke just came from the sheriff's office, he does not enter the diner through either the diner's door nor the hotel's door, and he appears out of breath. Clearly, the set for the sheriff's office was a little distant from the set for the diner.
