Synopsis
Edit
- A séance has been held in the great house of Collinwood, a séance which has suspended time and space, and sent one girl on an uncertain and frightening journey into the past, back to the year 1795. Where in a tower room, one man, a living secret from most of his family, waits impatiently for a cure to be removed.
Joshua awaits Natalie’s arrival at the Old House. She hoped never to enter this house again. The portrait of Josette is in Josette’s room, Joshua explains to her, put there by Barnabas. Natalie knows it was there after Barnabas died so Joshua explains further… “Barnabas is not dead.” Zoom in on Natalie. Natalie wonders why Josette jumped then. Joshua didn’t realize the pain for her that this would rehash and apologizes. He is under a curse and Joshua hopes Natalie’s knowledge of occult powers would help him undo the curse, “Miss Winters is not the witch.”
Natalie asks who is and then answers her own question. Since Peter came to her and told her Angelique is she’s tried to accept it. When Joshua asks about her powers, she misunderstands and thinks he is blaming her for being Angelique’s accomplice. Joshua tells her no, he just wants the curse undone. “What do you want from me?” “I don’t know.” It sounds like to me that Natalie has seen or heard of a curse once being lifted. It’s not completely impossible, and she might know of some way. She will send a psychic message until they hear a knock on the door of the otherwise emptied out Collinwood: but the person who shows up to raise the curse may be a friend or an enemy. Natalie knows of one curse that was ended. The candles blow out and the portrait that is there hanging now, shows light and is illuminated by an image of a painting of Angelique. They leave.
Joshua gives the servants the night off and tells the others they must go see the governor speak at the Inn. Natalie and Daniel are already waiting in a carriage. Riggs has been sent ahead for overnight accommodations. When Nathan, suspicious, asks if he will be joining them, Joshua uses the excuse of his gout bothering him. For some reason he goes upstairs, leaving Nathan and Millicent alone in the drawing room. Nathan convinces Millicent to go investigate the light that he claims is not there but that she sees. He really sees it too. He also tells her at once point he doesn’t understand her. One of them mentions a prison poet. A storm is coming. Millicent then tries to tell Nathan she does not see the light and he tells her that is her first lie to him. For, he still sees it and does not tell her.Millicent will go to the Tower Room, Nathan manipulating her into it, telling her she is not afraid of a house she knows well. And that she must go alone.
Joshua watches from the door as we hear the carriage pull away. Natalie starts the incantation and tells him to think of Barnabas. “He is all I think of now.” Natalie also tells Joshua to ignore anything strange that happens. She calls, “Come now…” Nathan’s footsteps are on the steps and he comes to the door and listens…and in a fake flub (?), his sword hits the door and makes a loud sound. Joshua opens the doors and finds him there. He claims he cannot find Millicent. Joshua tells him she is probably in the carriage with Daniel and Naomi. He urges Nathan to get on his horse and follow them. Natalie has to start the incantation again.
Millicent hears Nathan’s words in her head urging her on. When she opens the doors…in yet another stylish series of shots, we see her shadow a kind of silhouette…and she seems to form a cross. Barnabas’s hands come at her in shadow also. He bites her after declaring he will let her go if she keeps quiet about him. She tells him that she will not. Her agonizing scream is heard as he bites her. The candle Natalie is using goes out and she thinks it may be Angelique. All the candles go out and outside the doors to Collinwood, they hear footsteps. The doors blow open and outside (with neatly groomed Collinwood bushes), stands an out of focus old woman who announces her name as Bathia Mapes. She tells them the man they have sought to help has left this house
