Sam Evans unsuccessfully tries to get out of painting a portrait of Burke Devlin. Carolyn Stoddard is jealous over Victoria Winters' meeting with Burke.

Synopsis[]

My name is Victoria Winters. The hand of death brushed close to the house on Widows' Hill then moved away, stirring the musty air with its touch, filling the corridors with the overpowering scent of fear and hatred.

Joe Haskell calls Carolyn and gloats about finding Victoria in Burke's hotel room. She's upset and it's obvious. David Collins eavesdrops on the other phone in the foyer and lies to Carolyn that he wasn't listening. With an air of manipulation, the boy suggests that Victoria is only with Burke Devlin because Carolyn's interested in him. This upsets his older cousin and she angrily yells at David to "get out of here!"

Sam Evans is looking for his daughter Maggie and bumps into Joe at the Collinsport Inn. The elder correctly guesses that the young man is nursing a hangover. Joe says Maggie will be back in half an hour. The two make small talk before Sam departs upstairs to meet Burke Devlin.

Burke and Sam chat about the gossip concerning the accident. Burke says the incident is cleared up and he's off the hook. Sam asks Burke for a drink after saying he can't do the portrait. Burke is incensed by this, but lets Sam help himself to the liquor in the kitchen.

Victoria returns to Collinwood. She runs into Carolyn, who is obviously jealous of Victoria's meeting with Burke Devlin. As the two women talk in the drawing room, David is eavesdropping right outside. Vicki says that her meeting with Burke was only to find something out about her past. Her voice dripping with venom, Carolyn asks Vicki if she and Burke have made plans for the future.

As Sam begins gulping down whiskey, Burke presses Sam with some hard questions about his connection to Roger Collins. To convince the reluctant painter to accept his commission, Burke offers him 1,500 dollars ($500 more than his previous offer in 22) to do the portrait. Sam finally agrees.

In the diner, Sam sees Joe again. The younger man is about to leave but his elder insists that they sit together for a moment. Sam starts speaking cryptically about Collinwood. With a look of maddened desperation, he tells Joe to get Carolyn out of there before it's too late. However, Joe insists that he loves his hometown and has no intention of leaving.

Back at the house, Carolyn apologizes to Victoria for her behavior. Vicki reassures Carolyn that she is not going to leave. Shortly after failing to reach Burke by telephone, Vicki runs into David. After ignoring her queries with cold silence, David tells Victoria that she's going to be sorry she ever came to Collinwood.

Memorable quotes[]

Carolyn: (to David) You are a monster. A real, solid 14-carat monster.

Sam: Hangover?
Joe: How'd you guess?
Sam: I'm an old hand, Joe. I got a million recipes how to cure it. None of them work. The best thing is black coffee.
Joe: Ha, my fourth cup.
Sam: Well, that's the cure. Either cure it or drown it.

Victoria: Carolyn, you idiot.
Carolyn: Thank you. Thank you very much.

Carolyn: Vicki, Burke doesn't mean anything to me. It's...I don't know....I just have to grab everything, Vicki....everything.
Vicki: That's a good way to end up with nothing.
